In the past, it was indicated that, if a fobbed in driver, after a certain amount of time, has left the vehicle after a trip is completed, is then no longer assigned to that vehicle, leaving the assignment as "Unknown Driver" It had related to how much time was allotted until the reminder time trips.
I tried to ask Geotab Ace this question, but it only reference manually assigning drivers.

Thank you for asking your question in our community. I believe you will want to turn the driver identification reminder on in order for it to work like this. If the "Driver Identification Reminder" is turned off, and a driver scans their NFC fob, the driver will remain associated with the vehicle until another fob is scanned or a new driver is assigned via MyGeotab or the Geotab Drive app. The driver will not be automatically disassociated after the ignition is turned off. If the "Driver Identification Reminder" is turned on, the driver will remain associated for the specified time period (e.g., 30 seconds) after the ignition is turned off. After this time, the driver will be automatically unassigned.
