What you're seeing is coming from Smart Driver ID, which is the Geotab Video feature that uses AI to identify and assign drivers to trips and video events. When it assigns the wrong name, it usually means the face template was matched to the wrong driver profile, or the camera didn't get a clear read of the driver's face.
Here's how to both correct it and reduce it going forward:
1. Fix the incorrect mapping (this also corrects past trips)
Navigate to Video → Settings → Smart Driver ID. Under Driver Mappings, find the template that's matched to the wrong profile, click to edit it, and select the correct driver profile. The trips and events that were previously assigned to the wrong driver will automatically be reassigned to the correct one.
2. Make sure the camera has a clear view of the driver
Misidentification most often happens when the driver's face is partially blocked — hanging air fresheners, sun visors, or other obstructions in the cabin can cause it. A clear, unobstructed view of the driver's face gives the most accurate matches.
3. Consider using Suggestion mode instead of Auto-assignment
Smart Driver ID has two modes. In Auto-assignment mode, confident matches are assigned automatically. In Suggestion mode, the AI suggests a driver but a manager reviews and approves each one before it's finalized. If accuracy is a concern, Suggestion mode gives you a manual checkpoint to catch errors before they're applied.
4. Merge duplicate templates and keep reviewing
If the same driver has multiple templates (for example, sometimes wearing a hat or sunglasses), assigning them all to the same profile and merging them improves accuracy over time. Regularly reviewing your driver mappings and suggestions helps the model get better.
