How to interpret the various lamp values associated with the fault codes in MyGeotab?

Hello!

I had a question regarding the interpretation of the values of the various lamps. In the attached example, we observe that the values of the three lamps (mil lamp, red stop lamp and the amber warning lamp) fluctuate between 0 and 1. Does this imply that the lamps are turning off and on intermittently? We assumed that once the lamp is on (i.e., a value of 1), it would stay at that value till the associated problem is resolved (i.e., a continuous series of 1's, followed by 0's, with the lamp turning back to 1 if a new issue arises). However, in the data, they are alternating between 1 and 0 with rapid frequency. The data in the attached image was pulled from Geotab.

Therefore the question is, what do these values represent and how should we be interpreting them?

Thank you!

Hello @draxinar-1418 ,

Thank you for asking your question in our community. I am not 100% sure but I will reach out to our team to get an explanation of this measurement. When you pulled the report what was the exact name of the measurements? Particularly the ones you have in this screen shot. This will help me ask the question to our engineering team.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Have a good one!

Hi @EishiFUN ,

The names are: malfunctionLamp, protectWarningLamp, redStopLamp, amberWarningLamp. These come directly from the FaultData.

Thanks a lot for your help as always!

Commenting to follow and learn along on this one. :)

Hi,

those values in the report are related to the severity of the fault code, and not to the status of the lamp. So they are best to be interpreted as "Does this fault code trigger a mil/red/amber indicator on the dash?".

Unfortunately it's not visible on the screenshot, but there are likely different fault codes in that list with different severity associated with them.

Best regards,

Tamas

Hi Tamas,

Thanks a lot for your clarification! I had some follow up questions.

Are these values a probabilisitic indicator rather than a definitive one? That is, if a fault code has a 1 as a value for one of these lamp indicators, would it for sure trigger a lamp, or does a 1 imply that the fault code has a high likelihood of triggering a lamp on the dash?

In some cases, the same fault code has alternating values of the lamps (as seen in the example):

example

I am not sure how to interpret these quick alternating values, as this seems to imply the same fault code could trigger and then could not trigger a lamp on the dash, and then can again. Is this the right way to look at it, or am I interpreting it incorrectly?

Is there a way to infer whether one of these lamps are actually on on the dashboard from these values, or would I need to look at another diagnostic/source for this information?

Thank you again for your help! :)

Hi,

sorry for the delayed answer. Thanks for providing a detailed example: as far as I know, these values are definitive (according to the J1939-73 standard), but there could be differences in the way an OEM implements these DTCs. To dive deep in the concrete vehicle / case, please log a ticket and our Support team will investigate further.

Best regards,

Tamas
