How does Restricted Data Mode work?

Hello

From recent MyGeotab versions (I belive from v9), Restricted Data Mode was introduced. From my understanding, Personal Mode (formerly called Privacy Mode) hides GPS logs, while Restricted Data Mode inhibits the GPS logs.

My question is: how is data restricted when this new feature is enabled? From hardware? Or from software?

Hello @CesarOrtiz-1781

Please have a look at the link provided below.

Restricted Data Mode

Restricted Data Mode (Feature Preview)

Geotab has been working ******* improving the functionality of Personal Mode, and is happy to announce the next iteration of this feature, now known as Restricted Data Mode!

Restricted Data Mode allows drivers and fleet managers to temporarily forego recording GPS coordinates and/or GPS speed on their vehicles. When Restricted Data Mode is enabled, location features in MyGeotab that use GPS such as position, trips, speed profiles, and GPS based exceptions, are not available. The key difference between the Personal Mode and the new Restricted Data Mode is that the GPS record is not stored in the database during that time period.

I hope this helps.

Thank you

Jason

Hello

Yes, that's good info. However, my question is more related to how is it being done:

  • If it happens at a hardware level (GO device), then I would assume the vehicle needs to be stopped in order to be applied when enabled (something similar happens with custom parameters).
  • If it happens at a software level (MyGeotab or gateway), then the activation of Restricted Data Mode won't need to wait until the vehicle is stopped.

On the other hand, from this clarification, I'd like to understand also what would be the behaivor in case a device replacement occur.

The way I read this part, which I 100% could have misinterpreted.

"The key difference between the Personal Mode and the new Restricted Data Mode is that the GPS record is not stored in the database during that time period."

My understanding Restricted mode was happening right at the database level between the GO device and MyGeotab as it says the GPS record is not stored in the DB when in restricted mode.

Where as Personal mode appeared to just stop the database from making it accessible via MyGeotab, but was likely still storing it.

That is the way I understood it. As mentioned I could be wrong, I am sure someone else may know the answer in the community.

As for device replacement. I would not suspect any issues if you are referring to using the MyGeotab Replace with new device option... I would think the replacement device would connect for the first time to get any Firmware or Parameter GO device level settings and get updated accordingly. I can not think of a reason for an issue myself. Someone else in the community may know if there are any issues associated with this.

Thank you

Jason

That makes sense. If it's a change at dabase level, then there wouldn't be a problem when replacing a new device (doing it properly in MyGeotab).

Just would like (if possible) a confirmation.

Still have questions?
