What is the difference between these three data points?
last GPS record,
last engine record,
last device communication

User uploaded image 1

What values—or what key factors—are taken into account to provide this data?

In MyGeotab, it is possible to obtain this information through reports such as the Advanced Device Report or Engine Data report.

However, what are the main differences, and which values are considered?

Hi

Here's the difference between these three pieces of data in MyGeotab:

Last GPS record: It's the date and time of the most recent geographic position captured by the device.

Last engine record: It shows when the last data was received directly from the vehicle's computer (like the odometer).

Last communication: It's the exact moment the device last connected to the Geotab servers to send information.

The main differences lie in the source and purpose of the data:

Last GPS record: Uses satellites to get exact coordinates. The latitude and longitude values are considered.

Last engine record: Comes from the vehicle's ECM. Values like the odometer or engine hours are considered.

Last communication: It's a record from the Geotab system. It indicates the last time the device had cellular coverage to transmit.

Hello, this is likely due to the following:
1. “Heartbeat” Signal with the Vehicle Turned Off: When the vehicle is parked and the engine is off, the GO device enters sleep mode to conserve the vehicle's battery.
However, it does not stop communicating entirely: During the first 48 hours it is turned off, it sends a “heartbeat” signal (status ping) every 30 minutes.
After 48 hours, it sends a heartbeat every 23 hours.
The “Last Communication” date will be constantly updated in the system, but the GPS and Engine Log will continue to show the exact time the last trip ended.
