We have a external system that provides us with curren driver id, we want to update the trips with this information?
Should we use DriverChange? or can we update directly on the trips? We will always update past trips.

Based upon the UI interactions when you assign a historical I'd say that using DriverChange is the correct choice. Just set the dateTime of the DriverChange to the startTime of the trip where you want it to take effect. Results will not be immediate - they will be queued for processing when the DriverChange event from the past is created.
