Frequently Asked Questions

What is the data reporting frequency for the Ford Premium plan? Does it affect reports in MyGeotab?

Data is reported every 30 seconds for the devices under Ford Premium plan. This can affect some MyGeotab reports. For example:

Trips: Trip History on the map may not appear very smooth around corners and turns.
Speeding: Speeding events which occur only between the two data recording intervals (30 seconds) will not be captured.
Distance: Distance is calculated based on GPS records. If the vehicle is following a curve, the distance calculation will be slightly lower than actual.
Seatbelt exceptions: The default MyGeotab seatbelt rule triggers an exception every time the speed crosses 10km/hr when the seatbelt was unbuckled. As the OEM device reports speed data only every 30 seconds, it may appear to cross the 10 km/hr threshold less number of times as compared to a device which has more granular reporting. Hence, the seat belt exception counts may be different.

Ford Premium5 plan provides data at 5 seconds frequency which helps in addressing above mentioned issues.

Is the watchdog report expected to work for devices under Ford plans?

Yes, the watchdog report is supported for devices under Ford plans, however the reporting will be slightly different than a GO device. A heartbeat signal is sent by the Ford device every 24 hours of vehicle inactivity. However, to preserve the vehicle’s battery power, the vehicle enters a deep sleep mode and the heartbeat signal is turned off in case a device remains inactive for a certain period of time (7 days in most cases).

Are there any conditions under which the vehicle may stop reporting data on Ford plans?

Ford devices will stop reporting any data after the vehicle enters deep sleep mode. Deep sleep mode is designed to conserve battery power on the vehicle. This setting is activated when the vehicle falls under one of the following conditions:

Vehicle is inactive for 14 consecutive days
Battery voltage drops below 9.5 volts
Extreme cold/hot weather conditions

How are Hard Acceleration and Harsh Braking events detected for devices under the Ford Premium and Ford Premium5 plans?

Forward acceleration (hard acceleration) data is available from the device when acceleration remains above 0.41g (4 m/s^2) for 2 seconds. Backward acceleration (harsh braking) data is available from the device when acceleration remains below -0.31g (3 m/s^2) for 2 seconds. Users can set thresholds beyond these values on MyGeotab so that an exception is generated every time the acceleration value crosses the desired threshold. Exceptions will only be generated if the rule is enabled as well as depending on the threshold set in that rule.
