Looking for Info on Log Transfer Notes/Explanations

Hey Everybody,

I have a customer that is doing some test log transfers, but has gotten the following errors:

  1. Missing Output File Comment. Drivers may be cited for a violation if a file is submitted without the requested ELD Output File comment provided by a safety official. [Information]
  2. Missing Required Field. The field CMV VIN is required for File Header Segment, Power Unit Line file lines if the event was generated when the CMV was powered on and the connection to the ECM is not experiencing a malfunction. If the CMV was in a powered on state and the connection to the ECM is not experiencing a malfunction when this event was created this would indicate the ELD is not in compliance with the ELD Rule. [Information]
  3. File Received. File Received [Information]
  4. Missing Required Field. The field CMV VIN is required for CMV List Line file lines if the event was generated when the CMV was powered on and the connection to the ECM is not experiencing a malfunction. If the CMV was in a powered on state and the connection to the ECM is not experiencing a malfunction when this event was created this would indicate the ELD is not in compliance with the ELD Rule. [Information]

So, points 2 and 4 are identical, which makes me wonder if they are referring to two separate vehicles that this driver was using. (If so, they aren't particularly useful notes without a lot of digging if they don't actually identify the vehicle in question.)

I'm trying to figure out why point 3 is there, if that means everything is all good.

And point 1 is a bit confusing as well with no actual context about to what it is referring.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide on this for me! :)

Best,

Joy B

Hey @JoyB-1408 ,

Thank you for reaching out to our community with your questions regarding the log transfer errors. I understand that these messages can be confusing and require further clarification. While we don't have the authority to answer on behalf of the FMCSA, I can certainly provide some insights based on our knowledge and experience. I did receive a good amount of push back from our team since these responses are from the FMCSA and not from us. Here is what I was able to find

Regarding the specific errors:

"Missing Output File Comment. Drivers may be cited for a violation if a file is submitted without the requested ELD Output File comment provided by a safety official."

This message indicates that a comment is required in the ELD Output File during log transfer. The comment typically includes additional information related to the specific log transfer, which may be requested by a safety official for compliance purposes.

Why did I get an error message "Missing Output File Comment. Driver may be cited for a violation if a file is submitted without the requested ELD Output File comment provided by a safety official."?

"Missing Required Field. The field CMV VIN is required for File Header Segment, Power Unit Line file lines if the event was generated when the CMV was powered on and the connection to the ECM is not experiencing a malfunction. If the CMV was in a powered on state and the connection to the ECM is not experiencing a malfunction when this event was created, this would indicate the ELD is not in compliance with the ELD Rule."

The message is not an error.

This is a message to remind the officer to check and ensure that all D logs have vehicles and VIN's next to them. This message shows up because the transfer can sometimes include logs which has 'no vehicle', which is a perfectly normal occurrence because the transfer includes Boundary Logs

The customer does not need to worry because the DriveApp does not create D logs when there is no vehicle attached (and those vehicles have VIN's).

The message is a note for the officer to check for any Driving logs that do not have VIN's - because other ELD systems can have that occur, but ours cannot.

What does the message "Information: The field CMV VIN is required" mean when transferring HOS logs?

"File Received."

The "File Received" message indicates that the log transfer file has been successfully received. It is a standard notification to acknowledge the successful receipt of the transfer.

Please keep in mind that official information from the FMCSA can be sought for more comprehensive and authoritative guidance on these matters.

Thanks Eishi,

The first thing I had the customer do was make sure the vehicle information was put in properly. User account looks good.

I don't mean to rush anyone, but this is for an upcoming DOT audit, so if possible for anyone to answer as promptly as possible, that would be a great help. :)

Best,

Joy
