Asset types

Asset types help you classify and organize your assets. They are a default group in MyGeotab used to sort your assets by vehicle or equipment type.

The Asset type group field is required when you add an asset. The type you choose affects the information you need to add and the data you will collect. For example, if you add an asset to the trailer group, you cannot assign a driver to it, but you can link it to a vehicle.

You can also create new asset types if your fleet needs them.

There are four default asset types to choose from:

  • Vehicles: This type is for company cars, trucks, and special vehicles. It's designed to collect and analyze data for road assets.

  • Trailers: This type is for managing towable items like cargo and utility trailers. It helps with tracking and logistics.

  • Containers: This category is for non-powered gear like containers and pallets. It helps you keep track of these items.

  • Equipment: This type is for assets needing an external power source, such as heavy machinery. It helps in monitoring valuable equipment.

Note: In some cases, you may receive the following error when trying to edit a vehicle's asset type: "You cannot change this asset's type because it is associated with duty status and/or inspection logs. You can archive the existing asset and create a new one with the correct asset type." This is because vehicle-type assets cannot be changed to non-vehicle asset types if they have associated log data such as duty status or inspection logs. In these cases, you must archive the existing asset to preserve log records and create a new asset with the correct asset type.
