Connecting your BI tool to the Geotab Data Connector

Connect Microsoft Power BI, Excel, or Tableau to the Geotab Data Connector using the OData protocol.

Before connecting, ensure you have your access URL and MyGeotab credentials ready. See Find your Data Connector access URL for details.

Connecting Power BI to Geotab Data Connector

Connect Power BI to the Geotab Data Connector using an OData feed to import your fleet data.

Data imported through the Geotab Data Connector is stored and cached locally in the Power BI file. Refresh your data daily to access the latest information.

  1. Under the Data ribbon tab, select Get data.
  2. Select OData Feed. If OData Feed is not visible, select More..., then select Other from the left menu, and then select OData Feed.
  3. Select the Basic radio button.
  4. In the URL field, paste your access URL from Find your Data Connector access URL, then click OK.
  5. When prompted for authentication, select Basic from the left menu.
  6. Enter your credentials:
    • Username: <MyGeotab Database Name>/<MyGeotab Username>

    • Password: your MyGeotab password

  7. For Select which level to apply these settings to, do not modify the default selection.
  8. Click Connect to view the available data resources.
  9. From the Data Navigator, select the tables and resources you want to import, then click Load to import the data, or click Transform Data to transform the data before loading it into the Power BI data model.

Connecting Excel to Geotab Data Connector

Connect Microsoft Excel to the Geotab Data Connector using an OData feed to import your fleet data.

Data imported through the Geotab Data Connector is stored and cached locally in the Excel workbook file. Refresh your data daily to access the latest information.

  1. Under the Data ribbon tab, select Get Data.
  2. Under From Other Sources, select OData Feed.
  3. Select the Basic radio button.
  4. In the URL field, paste your access URL from Find your Data Connector access URL, then click OK.
  5. When prompted for authentication, select Basic from the left menu.
  6. Enter your credentials:
    • Username: <MyGeotab Database Name>/<MyGeotab Username>

    • Password: your MyGeotab password

  7. For Select which level to apply these settings to, do not modify the default selection.
  8. Click Connect to view the available data resources.
  9. From the Data Navigator, select the tables and resources you want to import, then click Load to import the data, or click Transform Data to transform the data before loading it into the Excel data model.

Connecting Tableau to Geotab Data Connector: New workbook

Connect the Geotab Data Connector to a new Tableau workbook using an OData server connection.

Data imported through the Geotab Data Connector is stored and cached locally as a Tableau extract file. Refresh your underlying data sources daily to access the latest information.

Important:

Tableau requires a server-specific access URL. Use the URL from the Geotab Data Connector Add-In, not the unified URL used by Power BI and Excel. See Find your Data Connector access URL.

  1. In the Connect navigation pane on the left, under To a Server, select More....
  2. Select OData from the expanded list of server sources.
  3. In the Server field, paste your Tableau-specific access URL from Find your Data Connector access URL.
  4. Under Authentication, select Username and Password.
  5. Enter your credentials:
    • Username: <MyGeotab Database Name>/<MyGeotab Username>

    • Password: your MyGeotab password

  6. Click Sign In to view the available data resources.
  7. From the left menu under Table, drag the table or resource you want to import into the drag area.
  8. To add more tables to your workbook, follow the steps in Connect with Tableau: existing workbook.

Connecting Tableau to Geotab Data Connector: Existing workbook

Add the Geotab Data Connector as a new data source in an existing Tableau workbook.

  1. In the menu bar, select Data.
  2. Select New Data Source.
  3. On the Connect screen, under To a Server, select More....
  4. Select OData from the expanded list of server sources.
  5. In the Server field, paste your Tableau-specific access URL from Find your Data Connector access URL.
  6. Under Authentication, select Username and Password.
  7. Enter your credentials:
    • Username: <MyGeotab Database Name>/<MyGeotab Username>

    • Password: your MyGeotab password

  8. Click Sign In to view the available data resources.
  9. From the left menu under Table, drag the table or resource you want to import into the drag area.
