Map providers

You can choose your own map provider in order to configure the Map to best suit your needs.

The map provider supplies the basemap tiles used to display the Map, and handles reverse geocoding (converting coordinates into street addresses).

The application supports a variety of basemaps, allowing you to select the most useful map for your area of interest. The following is a high-level overview of different providers:

  • Google Maps (default)

    • Street View maps

    • Arrows denote travel direction for one-way roads

Map providers are managed in the Layers menu in the Map feature.

Note:

Changing your map provider affects how the Map is displayed and how addresses are looked up. It does not change the speed limit data used by the Map, reports, or rules. Speed-limit data is sourced separately and is not affected by your map provider selection. Learn more in How Geotab determines speed limits.

Changing your map provider

Learn how to change your basemap provider in MyGeotab

  1. Click the Profile icon in the top toolbar and select System Settings.
  2. Click the Maps tab.
  3. On the Map Provider card, select a new basemap from the dropdown.

  4. Click Save.
The Map will update immediately to show the new basemap you selected.

Correcting the posted road speed of a road segment

Learn how to correct a posted road speed for a road segment in MyGeotab.

Warning:

Changes to posted road speed apply across all MyGeotab databases, not only your own. Only users with permission to post road speed changes should make these corrections.

  1. Select the affected road segment on the map.
  2. Select Update posted road speed.
  3. Enter the correct speed.
  4. Select Apply changes.

The corrected speed is visible in MyGeotab immediately. Backend speeding calculations may continue using the previous value for up to 48 hours because of data caching.

If the road segment has the wrong length or position, does not exist, or needs to be split or combined, correct the road data in OpenStreetMap instead.

Nearby road not found

Zoom in closer to the specific road before updating its speed.

Nearby road cannot be found

Correct the road speed data in OpenStreetMap. Geotab picks up the correction in a future quarterly Map Server update.

Invalid speed value

Increase the road speed in increments of 5, saving each increment until you reach the target speed.

Incorrect unit of measurement

Near regional borders, the system can interpret km/h as mph or mph as km/h based on the majority of GPS points in the map segment. Manually update the road speed to override the system interpretation.

Updating road information in OpenStreetMap

Learn how to update road names and attributes in OpenStreetMap to correct road data in MyGeotab.

Use OpenStreetMap when a road is missing, has incorrect geometry or attributes, or needs to be split or combined. MyGeotab users cannot correct these underlying road details directly in MyGeotab.

  1. Navigate to OpenStreetMapNo Content found for https://www.openstreetmap.org/.
  2. Create an OpenStreetMap account if you do not already have one.
  3. Find the road that needs an update.
  4. Add or adjust the road attributes, such as its name, road type, or speed limit.
  5. Reshape an existing road or draw a new road when needed.
  6. Save your changes.

OpenStreetMap corrections are picked up by Geotab in a future quarterly Map Server update rather than applied immediately.

For speed-limit corrections that should take effect in MyGeotab immediately, create a customer override in MyGeotab. Overrides apply globally and may take up to 48 hours to affect backend speeding calculations.
