Coaching

The coaching features in MyGeotab allow you to use video events to coach your drivers on safer driving behavior.

Note: This feature is available for GO Focus Plus cameras only.

The Coaching page in MyGeotab provides an overview of events and trends captured by your fleet's cameras.

Video coaching is supported for all AI-based cameras, including Marketplace Partners. The following cameras are currently supported:
  • GO Focus Plus

  • GO Focus Pro

  • Surfsight AI12

  • Surfsight AI14

  • Xirgo

Video coaching is enabled by default for GO Focus Plus and GO Focus Pro cameras. For Marketplace Partner cameras (Surfsight and Xirgo), you must install the associated Add-In to enable coaching.

The page is organized into two tabs: Overview and Coaching. The cards at the top of the page highlight key information about your fleet, such as the rate of events per 1,000 km.

Coaching feature requirements

To use all features available on the Coaching page, you need to:

  • Enable Driver ID

  • Set up company groups

  • Have the View Recorded Video security clearance

Coaching Overview tab

The Coaching Overview tab gives you a high-level view of safety trends and events in your fleet.

The Overview tab of the Coaching page uses three features to help you visualize safety trends and events at a high level:
  • Trend Graph, an interactive graph that shows a high-level view of events across your fleet and your driver's safety scores.

  • Spotlight, a section showing events from the time period you selected. The Spotlight updates when you mouse over the Trend graph.

  • Performance Breakdown, a list of your fleet's safest and least safe drivers, sorted by events per 1,000 km.

Trend Graph

The Trend Graph gives you a clear view of your fleet's performance using an interactive graph. It has two views: Event Rate and Score.

The Event Rate view shows the rate of events in your fleet per 1,000 km. By default, it's set to Overview, which shows all events across your fleet. Setting the graph to Events allows you to toggle event types on and off for a more detailed view.

The Score view shows your drivers' average safety scores over time. It allows you to see long-term trends in behavior at a glance. You can hover over the graph to show the specific score for that time period and the impact of the recorded events.

When hovering over the graph in either view, the Spotlight feature beside the graph updates to show recorded videos from the selected date range.

Spotlight

The Spotlight feature shows relevant video recordings directly on the page for your review. It updates automatically when you hover over the Trend Graph, or when you switch the date range. You can set the date range to week, month, or max (all time).

You can click any video in the Spotlight to open the video player. The video player displays the event type, asset name, date, time, and trip information.

Performance Breakdown

The performance breakdown lists your fleet's safest and least safe drivers or driver groups.

When set to Overall, the performance breakdown shows the safest and least safe drivers in your fleet. It also shows the drivers with the biggest change in their score. Clicking on a driver in any of the lists automatically filters the trend graph and spotlight to show data for that driver only.

When set to Group, the performance breakdown shows the same data aggregated by drivers groups instead. You can view the group's data in the trend graph and spotlight by selecting it from the list.

Coaching tab

The Coaching tab on the Coaching page lets you coach your drivers based on their recorded behavior.

The Coaching tab is an AI-powered feature that provides a focused view to help you coach drivers based on their recorded behavior.

The feature uses Driver ID to pair events with drivers in your fleet without manual review or flagging. There are three tabs to help keep your view clean: Recommendation, Active, and History.

Recommendation tab

The Recommendation tab shows suggested coaching opportunities for you. You can click on a recommendation to open more detailed information.

Active tab

The Active tab shows any recommendations that you have reviewed and approved. Once a recommendation is approved, it becomes an active coaching session and moves from the Recommendation tab to the Active tab.

History tab

The History tab shows your completed coaching sessions. Once a coaching session is completed, it moves from the Active tab to the History tab. This helps you track coaching sessions and improvement over time. It also provides a record for demonstrating compliance.

Reviewing AI-powered recommendations

Learn how to review coaching recommendations provided by AI to forward them to your drivers.

  1. Navigate to Video > Coaching in the main menu.
  2. Select the Video coaching tab.
  3. Locate your recommended coaching sessions under the Recommendation tab and select a recommendation from the list.
  4. Review the recommended coaching session.
  5. Add a comment to the session.
  6. Click the Check icon in the top right corner to approve the recommendation.
Once you have approved a recommendation, it moves to the Active tab of the Video coaching page.

Enabling auto-approval for coaching recommendations

Learn how to set up auto approvals for coaching recommendations in MyGeotab to directly forward coaching sessions to drivers.

Note: Drivers need access to the Geotab Video app in order to review their coaching sessions.
  1. Navigate to Video > Settings in the main menu.
  2. Select the Coaching tab.
  3. Under Settings, click the checkbox for Auto-approval.
  4. Click Save.
Coaching session recommendations will now be automatically forwarded to your drivers without needing manual approval.

Installs tab

The Installs tab in Video Settings provides a central location to view and download installation reports for cameras in your fleet.

Note:

If no camera installations have been completed for your fleet, the Installs tab will be empty.

The Installs tab is available in Video > Settings. It gives fleet managers a single location to review all completed camera installation records without contacting installers directly.

On the Installs tab, you can:

  • View installation snapshots taken at the time of install

  • View vehicle information associated with each installation

  • Download and review completed installation reports

Driver Safety Score overview

Driver Safety Scores give you a data-driven assessment of your drivers' safe and unsafe driving habits.

The Driver Safety Score measures how a driver's behavior affects their risk of being involved in a collision, independent of road conditions or environment. It's designed to show the real impact of safe or unsafe driving habits, and to help assess how effective video coaching is over time.

The score is expressed as the predicted impact on kilometers (or miles) driver per collision:
  • Positive score: The driver is performing well. Safe behaviors are reducing collision risk.

  • Neutral score: The driver reflects average risk for their fleet.

  • Negative score: Unsafe behaviors are increasing the driver's collision risk.

The score can be converted to a standardized 1-100 scale, where 1 is the highest risk and 100 is the lowest risk. This makes it easier to compare drivers across your fleet.

How the score is calculated

The Driver Safety Score is calculated using an inverse function:

1 ÷ (w0+∑eiwi)÷ nc2c

The system calculates the score over a 30-day sliding window. This means it reflects recent driving behavior rather than a fixed period.

Equation ComponentWhat it means
w₀

A baseline value representing average driving risk

Σeᵢwᵢ

The weighted sum of all detected driving events (e.g., harsh braking, speeding). Each event type has its own weight based on how much it contributes to collision risk

÷ nc2c

Normalizes the score relative to near-collision frequency (100 near collisions per collision, expressed in miles/km).

Viewing driver scores

You can view driver safety scores on the Coaching page in MyGeotab.

  1. Navigate to Video > Coaching in the main menu.
  2. Select the Drivers tab.
  3. Filter the page:
    1. Select the drivers you want to view using the Drivers dropdown.
    2. Select a safety score range to view using the Score range dropdown.
  4. Click on a driver profile to open detailed information about their driver score and driving behavior.
Tip: You can quickly view the safest or least safe drivers in your fleet by sorting the page by driver score using the Sort dropdown in the top right corner of the page.

Viewing your Driver Safety Profile in the Geotab Video app

Drivers can view their personal safety profile directly in the Geotab Video app on Android and iOS.

The Driver Safety Profile gives you a consolidated view of your safety trends, coaching history, and score over time. When you log in to the Geotab Video app with your driver credentials, you see your own profile, not your fleet's data.

Note:

To access your Driver Safety Profile, you must log in to the Geotab Video app as a driver. Fleet managers can view individual driver profiles from the MyGeotab web dashboard.

Safety score trend

The safety score trend chart shows how your score has changed over time. Coaching interventions are marked directly on the chart as inflection points, so you can see how individual coaching sessions have affected your score.

Voice coaching statistics

When voice coaching is enabled, your profile displays your voice coaching statistics, including your compliance rate and repeat offense rate. These figures show how often you responded to in-cab voice alerts and how often the same behavior was flagged more than once.

Video coaching statistics

Your profile shows all video coaching sessions associated with you, including sessions that are currently active and sessions you have already completed.

Coaching effectiveness

The coaching effectiveness section shows your response and improvement trends following voice and video coaching sessions. This helps you understand whether your driving behavior has changed after coaching interventions.
