In MyGeotab can you control a car's ignition by changing the status (ON-OFF) in the Relay State Control Usage add-in?

Hi everyone,

We are running some test in a vehicle using this add-in, How does the driver key option work? We want to know if it is possible to control the car's ignition by changing the status (ON-OFF) in the addin,

Hi again @INACTIVE - Francisco Núñez , @jjake-8255 , and @andrewb-1122 ,

I heard back from the Add-in experts and they said, "the add-in options are similar to the options on the Vehicle Edit page ('Driver ID relay' section). The On and Off options are used to turn on and off a relay, and the 'DriverKey' option allows control of the relay using a driver key/NFC key." They also wanted me to point out that, we do not support the use of this for immobilization purposes.

You can find more information in the document SPR-RELAYKIT or you can always ask anything here.

Using the IOX-NFC relay function is an..unreliable/wildly unsafe method of dealing with safety-critical functions like ignition or starter inhibit. I know IOX-Keyless is a thing here in US/Canada, I'd suggest asking your PAM about options in your section of the world.

Now, onto the fun, totally unsupported, and "You can't sue me if your car burns down an orphanage" part:

Disclaimer: I've played around with this but I've never really had it work the way I wanted to or expected. The magic of the IOX-NFC black box strikes again. Btw, here's the official tooltip that tells you "it works but just don't expect it to do it right away":

"Pressing this [DriverKey] returns the Driver ID relay settings to default. The External Relay will be controlled by the Driver's ID key if Driver Identification Reminder is enabled under the Driver Feedback tab. The setting will take effect immediately if the vehicle is currently connected to the service or, otherwise, the next time it communicates."

The DriverKey option is the auto-trigger for the relay when a fob is scanned by the reader. Upon a successful read, the relay changes state. However, unless you exploit something like the DriverWhiteList (DriverApprovedList I think now?), any successful Geotab fob read will stop the Driver ID beep and click the relay on. You can force a state (On/off) or let the NFC reader handle it (DriverKey).

The Keyless beta firmware supports a continuous connection custom parameter that keeps an always-on connection back to the Geotab gateway to get commands. Maybe it works on the regular firmware version.

Hi @andrewb-1122

Thanks for the information, we use the IOX-NFCREADERA+ SPR-RELAYKIT without any problem to control the ignition of the vehicle through the validation of the key fob in the NFC, the question we have in particular is whether in this add-in it is You can control this action by activating the ON-OFF, we were doing the test with a vehicle but it did not work even though the car was in an area with a good signal.

I don't have the option to like this 5 times, so just going to say that this is the best Geotab disclaimer I've ever seen, @andrewb-1122. 😂

Hi @INACTIVE - Francisco Núñez and crew,

Just wanted to add that I have asked staff to confirm or deny if you can control car ignition by activating the ON-OFF. 😊 And that I second @jjake-8255; @andrewb-1122 that's the best disclaimer I've seen in the community to date.

Going to share that internally with my team because I think people will get a kick out of it haha 😊 Thanks for the information and laugh
