GO focus Rules question

Hey @patrickbarneaux Thank you for asking this question. Glad you came to our community. I would approach this in three parts: Speeding and idling Start with the fleet policy you want to enforce, then use a duration to avoid reacting to very brief events. For example, a speeding rule might require the vehicle to exceed the limit by a defined amount for a minimum number of seconds. Idling can be handled similarly. It can also help to create graduated rules, such as 5, 10, and 20 minutes of idling, but only send notifications for the higher-severity events. The lower-severity rules can remain available for reporting and trend analysis. Harsh braking and acceleration These rules are more dependent on vehicle type, road conditions, and driving context. The older sensor-based rules can produce more false positives, especially when applied to a mixed fleet. Where available, I recommend starting with the newer GPS-based harsh event rules. These use different thresholds based on vehicle class and are designed to reduce noise from events such as road conditions. If you still see unexpected results, review the vehicle classification, GPS data quality, and the surrounding driving context. Camera footage can also be useful when you need to understand why a specific event occurred. Notification strategy It is often better to separate rule detection from notification. First configure the rule and review the resulting events using alerts such as Log only or through reporting. Once you understand the event volume and confirm that the rule is useful, add email, popup, or driver notifications for the events that require action. The Collision Risk reports can also provide useful context by benchmarking driving risk against similar vehicles and operating conditions. This is complementary to exception rules, since it helps identify broader patterns rather than only individual events. The goal is not necessarily to eliminate all exceptions. It is to make sure the exceptions generated are meaningful, aligned with your safety policy, and actionable for the people receiving them. I hope that helps! Eishi FUN

How do you reduce false positives when creating custom rules in MyGeotab?

I took a quick look and I could only find the below engine diagnostics which all appear to indicate when the lights are on, rather than them not working.
Brake warning light (1. On)
Headlight light status (-1. Unknown, 0. Off, 1. On)
Tail lights status (0. Off, 1. On)
Vehicle light switch (0. Off, 1. Automatically on, 2. Low beam on, 3. Parking light on)

headlight and brake light OUT notification rule in MyGeotab

The short answer is Yes they do tigger at the start of an exception.

Do notifications should come at start or at the end of an exception?

Hi @jordenvinoray ! Great question - thanks for asking the Geotab Community! Yes, you can set up rules in MyGeotab to monitor the health status of your Surfsight cameras and receive notifications when their status changes. You'll want to configure a rule that reports on changes to camera health status which indicates if the device is working as expected and able to upload videos to MyGeotab. If a device isn't performing correctly, the camera health status will indicate the issue and suggest actions to restore its functionality. To create a rule that triggers when a camera health status changes, you can add a new rule with the following condition in the Advanced Conditions Editor:
Status Data Diagnostic "Video device health (0. HEALTHY, 1. UNSTABLE, 2. UNHEALTHY, 3. NOT_WORKING)" > 0 IsValueMoreThan[value=0]( FilterStatusDataByDiagnostic[diagnostic=aOzdYMcJkw06ft9g4uXvpIA] )
This condition will trigger the rule if the camera's health status is anything other than "HEALTHY" (0). To set this up:

Navigate to Groups & Rules > Rules from the main menu.

Click Add or + Rule.

Fill out the Rule name, and optionally select a color, groups to publish to, and add comments. Leaving the Publish to groups field empty will publish the rule to the Company group by default.

Navigate to the Conditions tab.

Click the Scroll icon to open the Advanced conditions editor to write your own custom conditions.

Enter:
Status Data Diagnostic "Video device health (0. HEALTHY, 1. UNSTABLE, 2. UNHEALTHY, 3. NOT_WORKING)" > 0 IsValueMoreThan[value=0]( FilterStatusDataByDiagnostic[diagnostic=aOzdYMcJkw06ft9g4uXvpIA] )

Navigate to the Notifications tab.

Click your desired notification type (Add email).

Specify the desired recipients and any other necessary details.

Click Add.

Click Save.

New custom rules can be found under the Advanced rules section. Once this report is set up, you should receive notifications for when the device is not working. Then you can view recommended actions to solve potential camera problems for each notification by:

Navigating to the Assets page in the main menu.

Navigating to the Cameras tab.

Locating the device you want to view.

Clicking the health status listed in the Cameras health column to open additional information about the problem.

Reviewing the recommended actions listed.

Please let me know if this helps, or if you were looking for something else or run into any issues! Warmest regards, Gen

How do I configure a rule to send me a notification on my Surfsight camera status?

I wanted to follow up on this and let you know I did not find a way to do this. If this is something you have a need for or would just like to see I would encourage you to submit some feedback using the feedback form at the bottom of this page. It will go straight to our product team to let them know our customers would like to have this functionality.

MyGeotab Rule notifications/Asset allocations

Hi, User. The “Video Not Available” error on Geotab GO FOCUS cameras occurs when the system records a rule or event, but the platform is unable to process or receive the media file stored on the camera. The steps are: 1. Check the Rule Settings in MyGeotab Go to Rules and Groups > Rules. Edit the rule that triggered the event (pencil icon). On the Media Upload tab, confirm that the selected option is Video (if it is set to Notification or Photo only, the player will display a black screen). 2. Confirm Hardware Connection and Power Engine Power: GO FOCUS cameras rely on power from the GO device. If the engine was off or in deep sleep mode during the upload attempt, the video will not be transmitted until the vehicle is restarted. Cell Service: If the event occurred in an area with no signal or in a tunnel, the camera cannot upload the clip in real time. The file remains in the internal memory (128 GB) and will be uploaded as soon as the vehicle regains 4G/LTE coverage. 3. Device Assignment and IOX Integration Make sure the IOX-CAMERA harness/cable or the direct connection to the GO device is not loose. Under Maintenance > Devices, verify that the GO FOCUS appears correctly linked to the serial number of the corresponding GO device. 4. Manual Video Request (Buffer On-Demand) If the automatic event upload failed, you can manually retrieve the video if the cam

The GO Focus Plus camera has a built-in NFC reader that can replace the IOX-NFC reader. To make the Unidentified Driver rule beep using the FOB through the camera, follow these steps: 1. Enable the reader in MyGeotab: Go to the camera settings tab and make sure the NFC reading feature is active. 2. Set up the Rule: In Rules & Groups > Rules, look for the 'Unidentified Driver' rule. 3. Add Notification: In the Notifications tab, select Add Beep Response and make sure the GO device is set to issue the sound alert when the rule condition is met. Keep in mind that Smart Driver ID (facial recognition) can also automate this assignment without needing physical FOBs.

MCP on Claude is amazing

Hi, if it was me, I'd create 2 custom rules & trial it on a couple of assets first. Once the zone has been created, go to RULES and ADD RULE. Under CONDITIONS select the relevant zone and choose ENTERING ZONE as the condition. Set the rule to apply from the time the staff member is expected to arrive home, for example 4.30pm. Assign the rule to the relevant asset and add an email notification when the vehicle enters the zone. eg: "vehicle 12345 has arrived at it's home zone at 4.33pm" Set up a second rule for when the vehicle does not arrive a the expected time. configure this rule to identify vehicles that have not entered the home zone by the nominated time and set up a 'CHECK VEHICLE' alert notification. This should tell you when the vehicle has arrived home safely and an alert when it has not arrived as expected & you can check on the driver. You would have to create separate rules for each zone location & associated asset - Copy & Paste only changing zone & asset name.
