Predictive Maintenance Insights

MyGeotab analyzes telematics data to surface predictive maintenance insights across your fleet automatically, without manual setup.

These insights help you prioritize maintenance, reduce unplanned downtime, and focus on the vehicles that need attention most.

Important: Predictive Maintenance reports and fault notifications use telematics data and fault codes to provide guidance only. They are not a guarantee of vehicle condition. The absence of a notification does not mean a vehicle is free of issues.

Electrical System Rating

Electrical System Rating (ESR) estimates the health of a vehicle's battery on a scale from 0 to 100, so you can schedule replacement before a failure occurs. The rating is calculated daily and grouped into four categories: Good (35-100), Fair (16-34), Caution (5-15), and Poor (0-4).

When a vehicle's rating drops to 15 or below, Geotab automatically generates a work request on the Work Order Management page. A stock rule is also available on the Rules page so you can set custom notification thresholds.

ESR is available as StatusData on the Measurements page and through the API on the Electrical System Rating diagnostic.

Restriction:
  • ESR measures gradual battery degradation over time and does not detect short-term issues such as battery drain.

  • Not available for electric vehicles.

  • Not calculated from OEM data.

Oil Life Remaining

Oil Life Remaining uses engine data and machine learning to estimate how much driving distance and time remain before an oil change is needed. This helps you plan maintenance around actual usage rather than fixed intervals.

When a vehicle approaches the end of its oil life, a work request is automatically generated on the Work Order Management page. Oil Life Remaining is also available as StatusData on the Measurements page and through the API on the Oil Change Prediction Distance Lower Bound and Oil Change Prediction Time Lower Bound diagnostics.

Restriction: Available on vehicles that report engine oil life data (engine code 77) with at least 30 days of recorded driving. Time and distance values are estimates - always verify against manufacturer warranty requirements.

Tire Pressure Critically Low

Tire Pressure Critically Low detects when a vehicle's tire pressure is genuinely critical. It filters out the noise and false positives common in raw TPMS warnings by comparing each vehicle's pressure against its peer group.

Enable the stock rule on the Rules page to receive notifications. The rule can also be configured to automatically generate work requests when a critically low pressure is detected.

The insight is available as StatusData on the Measurements page and through the API on four diagnostics: front left, front right, rear left, and rear right tire pressure status (0 = normal / 1 = low / 2 = high).

Restriction: Available only on vehicles that report tire pressure data. Typically this includes light-duty trucks and passenger vehicles. Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles may require third-party hardware.

Automatic Vehicle Downtime Detection

Note: This feature is in Beta.

Vehicle Downtime Detection automatically identifies when a vehicle is out of service due to a maintenance event, so you can understand the real business impact of breakdowns without manual tracking.

Downtime data is surfaced on the Maintenance Overview page in the Vehicle Downtime graph and the Longest Average Downtime performance list, and feeds into the Breakdown Rate metric. The Current Vehicle Down (days) diagnostic can also be used to build custom rules or reports.

Restriction:
  • Downtime is currently detected when a vehicle is towed to a service center. Other forms of downtime are not yet included.

  • Detection is not available on all OEM data.

Fault LifeCycles

Fault LifeCycles groups repeated occurrences of the same fault code into a single cycle, so you can see how long an issue has genuinely been present on a vehicle rather than sifting through individual ignition-level records.

When you select a fault on the Faults page, the side panel shows the first time seen, the last time seen, and the distance traveled with the fault present. A fault cycle ends when enough vehicle starts occur with no recurrence; if the fault appears again, a new cycle begins.

Note: Lifecycle grouping may behave differently for Geotab-generated faults under the "telematics device fault" source.

Risk of Breakdown - Faults

The Risk of Breakdown model gives each fault code a severity based on how often that fault historically leads to a towing event, so you can prioritize which faults to act on.

Severity is displayed in the Severity column on the Faults page. Hover over the column to see the estimated breakdown risk for that fault.

Restriction: Available for OBD-II fault codes only. Evaluates each fault code individually. For a vehicle-level view across multiple active faults, see Predicted Breakdown Risk - Vehicle.

Predicted Breakdown Risk - Vehicle

Note: This feature is in Beta.

Predicted Breakdown Risk takes a vehicle-level view of breakdown likelihood by analyzing all active faults together, rather than one at a time. Two individually "medium" faults can combine into a "critical" risk - something a fault-by-fault model cannot detect.

The Predicted Breakdown Risk score and its contributing fault codes are shown on the Asset Maintenance page, so you understand not just that a vehicle is at risk but why. The Maintenance Overview page also surfaces a Highest Risk of Breakdown list to help you prioritize fleet-wide attention.

Restriction: Currently available for OBD-II vehicles only. Contributing factors are limited to fault codes at this time; sensor-based factors (for example, Electrical System Rating and tire pressure) are planned for future releases.
