Fuel and Energy Overview
Use this page to see fuel use, idling, and emissions data for your fleet.
The Fuel and Energy Overview provides metrics on fuel consumption, efficiency, idling, and emissions across entire fleets, MyGeotab groups, and specific powertrain types. Fleet managers can use this data to identify high-consumption areas, reduce idling, and lower fuel costs.
To access the Fuel and Energy Overview, navigate to from the main menu.
Key features
Monitor key performance metrics: Gain visibility into fuel consumption and efficiency data across your fleet, including:

Before you start
Set up your access level and vehicle data before using this page.
Before using the Fuel and Energy Overview page, you'll need to ensure you have the correct clearances enabled. You'll also need to check that your assets' powertrain type is correctly set.
Security clearances and user types
Fuel and Energy Overview is available to MyGeotab users with Administrator, Supervisor, and View Only security clearances. The following clearances must also be enabled:
- View Fuel and Energy Overview
- Fuel and EV energy usage report
If either clearance is disabled, Fuel and Energy Overview does not appear in the main menu.
To view idling event data, the View events clearance must also be enabled. If disabled, the associated chart is not visible on the Fuel and Energy Overview page.

Powertrain group filtering
If a powertrain is unclassified or only labeled as Manually Classified and fuel data is reported, the powertrain filter on the Fuel and Energy Overview page automatically includes its data in the Internal Combustion Engine group. Reviewing vehicle classifications before using the feature ensures your reporting is accurate for every powertrain group.

Learn how the page is organized and what each section shows.
The Fuel and Energy Overview page is organized into three sections: metric summary cards, a trend graph, and opportunities for reduction.
Filter dropdown menu
Use the filter dropdown to control what data is displayed:
- Groups: The company groups to which the assets belong.
- Powertrain types: Battery electric vehicle, internal combustion engine, or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.
- Date Range: Last three months, last quarter, last year, or this year.
Metric summary cards
Summary cards show key metrics for your selected date range and adapt dynamically to your fleet composition and selected powertrain filter:
- Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles only: Fuel Economy, Fuel Used, Fuel Cost Estimate, Tailpipe Emissions, and Emissions Intensity.
- Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) only: Energy Economy, Energy Used, and Tailpipe Emissions Avoided.
- Mixed powertrain types or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) only: Combined fuel and energy metrics.
Trend graph
Selecting a metric card updates the trend graph to show how that metric has changed over time and compared to the prior year. For fleets with mixed powertrain types, the Tailpipe Emissions metric includes three tabs: Tailpipe Emissions, Emissions Intensity, and Tailpipe Emissions Avoided.
The total value included on the graph and the percentage change pill reflect the selected date range. The graph itself displays the full calendar year. Hover over any month to view that month's value.

The metrics displayed on the page depend on the mix of powertrain types in the fleet.

Idling reduction
The idling reduction section displays when the Fuel and Energy Economy or Fuel and Energy Used metric cards (or their fuel- or energy-specific equivalents, depending on your powertrain filter) are selected.
Pie chart: Shows total fuel used while idling for the selected date range, along with the percentage change compared to the previous period. The chart is split into two sections:
- Preventable: Includes idling events lasting between 10 and 60 minutes.
- Other: Includes idling events outside the 10-60 minute Preventable window. This typically represents necessary operational idling, such as brief engine warm-ups (under 10 minutes) or extended power take-off (PTO) activity (over 60 minutes).
Data table: Shows the top 20 groups with the highest percentage of fuel used while idling, relative to that group's total. Selecting a group updates the page to display data for that group. If a group is already selected, the table displays subgroups within it.
Bar chart (Idling Events): Shows the number of Idling and Idling Within Zone rule events (based on MyGeotab stock rules) and their associated duration in hours, by month. Only events for the selected powertrain are displayed. To view or modify the conditions of the fleet's stock Idling rules, click the horizontal ellipsis at the top right corner of the chart.
Selecting the Tailpipe Emissions metric card displays the opportunities section in terms of emissions reductions, rather than fuel and energy. Selecting the Tailpipe Emissions metric card also displays an additional opportunity section, Transitioning to EVs.
Transitioning to EVs
The Transitioning to EVs section outlines how much of your light-duty fleet can be replaced by electric vehicles (either Plug-in Hybrid or Battery Electric Vehicles). It also shows the amount of emissions your fleet could potentially prevent by switching over to an electric vehicle.

Can I export this data?
Not directly from this page. However, you can export key data, including fuel and EV energy usage and fuel economy, by running the Fuel and EV Energy Usage Report.
How frequently is new data populated in the Fuel and Energy Overview?
New data in the Fuel and Energy Overview is populated monthly. For example, data for the month of January will become available on the Overview page in early February (typically within the first few days of the month).
Why is there an empty data message appearing for the selected groups and/or date range?
This may occur for one of the following reasons:
- No activity or new devices: There was no fleet activity during the selected date range, or newly installed devices have not yet gathered enough data.
- Unprocessed data: Data for the selected date range is still processing or syncing to MyGeotab.
- No assets in group: The selected group contains no assigned assets. To confirm asset group assignments, navigate to the Assets page.
Why is there inaccurate or missing data when a specific powertrain group is selected?
This may occur when devices are not assigned to the correct powertrain group. Only the following built-in groups are used by the Fuel and Energy Overview when determining device powertrain type:
- Battery Electric Vehicle
- Internal Combustion Engine
- Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle
Devices are assigned to a specific powertrain group automatically, but it is possible for a device to be assigned to an incorrect powertrain group or be missing an assignment.
How can I verify which vehicles are in a powertrain group?
The powertrain groups listed on the page are built-in groups that can be selected on any page using the Groups filter.
To verify which vehicles are in a powertrain group, navigate to the Assets page and filter any of the powertrain groups within the Groups filter.
Why does the displayed data differ from the Fuel and EV Energy Usage page and/or report?
The Fuel and Energy Overview uses the same underlying data, but differences may occur due to:
- Data availability timing: Data is processed differently for each page and does not appear in the Fuel and Energy Overview until the start of the following month.
- Archived vehicles: The Fuel and Energy Overview includes archived vehicles by default. To ensure your data matches, make sure archived vehicles are included in the Fuel and EV Energy Usage report.
- Trip timing logic: The Fuel and Energy Overview uses trip start to attribute fuel data, while the report uses trip stop. This can result in slight discrepancies. Most Geotab products use trip start, and the Fuel and Energy Overview aligns with that standard.
Why am I seeing unusually high percentage changes (shown in the colored pills) for certain metrics?
If vehicles are being added to the fleet over time, the current period may show higher metric values (for example, fuel use or emissions) because more assets are being tracked. This is common for newer fleets or those that have recently added many vehicles to MyGeotab.
Why are there missing or no recommended replacements in the Transitioning to EVs section?
Only vehicles considered light-duty are included in the analysis for potential replacement. If your fleet has no light-duty vehicles, you won't see recommendations in the Transitioning to EVs section.
Is data from OEM subscriptions included in the Fuel and Energy Overview page?
Yes, but with limitations. The Fuel and Energy Overview page aggregates insights on fuel and energy usage, CO₂-eq emissions, and idling, and the inclusion of OEM data depends on the specific signals provided by each manufacturer.
Because data availability varies by OEM, certain metrics may not be fully populated for all vehicles. For a detailed breakdown of what is supported, refer to the OEM data coverage guide. This table represents our best estimate of coverage based on the specific requirements for each metric.
Can I view data for time periods that are not within the date picker options (for example, one month)?
Additional date range options are currently under development and expected to be available by Q1 2027.
What is the methodology for calculating fuel-equivalent values (L-e, L-e/100km, G-e, and MPG-e) from electric energy (kWh)?
Fuel-equivalent values are designed to compare the energy consumption of an electric vehicle (measured in kWh) to that of a gasoline vehicle. The calculations are based on the US EPA energy equivalent standard, which states that 1 gallon of gasoline is equivalent to 33.7 kWh. This standard is used to convert electric energy used for a trip (in kWh) into an equivalent volume of gasoline (in liters or gallons).
The following constants are used in the calculations:
- EPA Energy Standard: 33.7 kWh (energy in one gallon of gasoline)
- Liters per gallon: 3.785411784
What is the methodology for calculating the Fuel Cost Estimate?
MyGeotab estimates fuel cost by multiplying each vehicle's monthly fuel usage by the average fuel price for its primary operating location. The estimates do not reflect actual fuel card transactions or fuel expense records. Fuel prices are sourced weekly from Global Petrol Prices, a data provider that tracks retail fuel prices at the regional and country level across more than 150 countries.
MyGeotab uses the following priority order to determine the fuel price for each vehicle:
- Regional price (US and Canada): MyGeotab uses the fuel price for the state or province where the vehicle spends the most time.
- Country price (outside US and Canada): MyGeotab uses the fuel price for the country where the vehicle most often operates. If no location data is available for that vehicle, MyGeotab uses the most common country across the fleet. If neither is available, the country selected when the database was registered (visible in System Settings) is used as a fallback.
If no location data is available and the database country cannot be determined, US fuel prices are applied as a final fallback.
Vehicle eligibility: MyGeotab estimates fuel cost for gasoline and diesel vehicles, and PHEVs when operating on their combustion engine. Vehicles with other fuel types, including Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), Fuel Cell Electric, Biodiesel, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Ethanol, and Propane or Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), are excluded from the calculation. If a vehicle's fuel type is unknown or its powertrain group is unassigned in MyGeotab but fuel data is reported, gasoline prices are applied.
Currency: MyGeotab displays fuel costs in your account's display currency. If currency conversion is unavailable, costs display in USD. To confirm your account's currency setting, click the profile icon at the top right, then select Profile and check the Currency field in the Account Preferences section.
Hover over any month in the Fuel Cost Estimate trend graph to view the Total Cost for that month and the Rate (the market fuel price used in the calculation), shown per liter or gallon based on your Fuel economy measurement setting.
What is the methodology for calculating Tailpipe Emissions in the Fuel and Energy Overview?
Tailpipe Emissions represent the total greenhouse gas (GHG) impact expressed in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂-eq). This figure accounts for the combined Global Warming Potential (GWP) of carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O).
Conversion factors are automatically assigned based on your MyGeotab database registration region:
- US EPA: Applied to databases in the US and Canada.
- UK DEFRA: Applied to all other regions, including Europe, Brazil, and Australia.

What is the methodology for calculating Tailpipe Emissions Avoided from EVs in the Fuel and Energy Overview?
Tailpipe emissions avoided by battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are estimated by looking at how much energy they use. For every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity used, approximately 0.4 liters of fuel are saved compared to driving a similar internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. This efficiency factor is based on a review of several EV models and their ICE equivalents, which showed that, on average, an ICE vehicle would need about 0.4 liters of fuel to travel the same distance an EV can with 1 kWh of electricity.
The following values are used in the calculation:
- Efficiency factor: 0.4 L fuel saved per kWh energy out of the battery
- Emissions conversion factor: Based on regional standard (see Tailpipe Emissions methodology table above)
- The final value is divided by 1,000 to convert emissions from kilograms (kg) to metric tons (t)
