GO device accelerometer calibration

Learn what the GO device needs to calibrate its accelerometer and why the fault may persist.

The fault Accelerometer calibration in progress (more driving required) indicates that the device is still determining its orientation relative to the vehicle. It must determine up/down, left/right, and forward/back directions before it can accurately report accelerometer data.

The fault persists until calibration completes and indicates that more driving is needed. Excessively bumpy roads or a device that is not securely fastened can affect calibration. Firmware is not typically a factor.

Conditions required for calibration

  • Accelerometer events should occur primarily in the XY plane. If the device is loose or the vehicle is constantly on irregular terrain, the Z component (gravity) fluctuates and prevents calibration.

  • The device must detect significant movement that triggers acceleration events. The accelerometer-event threshold is greater than 1.5 m/s2.

  • A valid GPS latch is required when an acceleration event is detected. A GPS event must have a magnitude similar to the accelerometer event. The GPS-event threshold is greater than 1.4 m/s2.

The primary cause of this fault is insufficient driving time to gather the required data. Drive under normal conditions. If the fault persists after significant driving, follow Checking persistent GO device accelerometer calibration faults.

Checking persistent GO device accelerometer calibration faults

Check device mounting, road conditions, and GPS signal if the fault persists after driving.

Before you begin: The checks in MyGeotab require the necessary permissions. If access is limited, contact the Administrator or the authorized Partner that provided the device.

First ensure the vehicle has been driven under normal conditions. Use these checks if Accelerometer calibration in progress (more driving required) persists after significant driving.

Refer to GO device accelerometer calibration for the required data and event thresholds.

  1. Check that the GO device is securely fastened and not loose.

A loose device can prevent calibration.

  2. Evaluate the driving conditions.

Some bumps are normal, but consistently driving on severely irregular terrain can hinder calibration.

  3. Confirm that the vehicle operates in an area with good GPS signal reception.

Next steps: If the checks do not resolve the issue, call Support at the number provided in MyGeotab under Support > Contact Information, or start a live chat.
