Prepare to install a GO8 device and check that it sends data.

GO8 installation warnings

Review key warnings before a GO8 device is installed.

Warning:

Read and follow all safety information, including limitations of use, before installation. Failure to follow these instructions and warnings can result in loss of vehicle control, serious injury, or vehicle damage.

Warning:

Do not install, reconfigure, or remove this product while the vehicle is in motion or otherwise in operation. Complete all installation, configuration, and removal work only when the vehicle is stationary and securely parked.

Attempting to service devices while the vehicle is in motion could result in malfunctions or collisions, leading to death or serious personal injury.

Warning:

Secure all in-vehicle devices and related cabling, and keep them clear of vehicle controls, including the gas, brake, and clutch pedals. Use a cable tie to secure the device or extension harness to the OBD connector. Secure both sides of the harness. Without a cable tie, vehicle vibration can loosen the connection and indirectly cause engine computer failure, loss of vehicle control, or serious injury. Inspect devices and cabling regularly to confirm that they remain securely attached.

Warning:

If a vehicle warning light illuminates after installation, or the vehicle stalls or has a marked decrease in performance, shut off the engine, remove the device, and contact an authorized Partner.

Continuing to operate a vehicle with these symptoms can cause loss of vehicle control, and serious injury.

Installing a GO8 device

Learn how to connect, secure, and check a GO8 device.

  1. Locate the vehicle's engine diagnostic port.

The port is typically in the driver's area at or below knee level.

Heavy-duty vehicles use a different connector system. Contact an authorized Geotab Partner for heavy-duty connector applications or for extension harnesses if the device must be placed away from the engine diagnostic port.

The engine diagnostic port is in the vehicle's driver area.
  2. Connect the device to the engine diagnostic port.

Align the receiver end of the device with the port and push it in place. Make sure the device is securely connected to the diagnostic port.

The device emits six quick beeps, and all three lights on the device flash briefly.

  3. With the vehicle parked outdoors, start it and let it run for approximately three minutes.

Park outdoors so the device can locate satellites and exhaust fumes can vent.

The initial startup may take several minutes to complete.

The red LED powers on and glows on the face of the device. Shortly afterwards, the green and blue LEDs light up when the device connects to the cellular and GPS networks.

  4. Once all three LEDs are lit, secure the device with the supplied cable tie.

A cable tie secures a GO device to the vehicle's engine diagnostic port.
  5. For an under-dash installation with an extension harness, keep the antenna side pointing up toward the sky at all times.

This position allows faster GPS latch times. The GPS antenna in a GO8 is on the bottom side of the device.

  6. Log your installation at installmygps.com to check that the device is communicating correctly.

Use a PC or smartphone to open the site. Enter the installer name, company, and GO device serial number, found on the bottom of the device. Click Log Install.

The installmygps.com form includes installer name, company, and device serial number fields.
  7. Check the current device status on the page.

Green text with the last valid GPS record means the device is communicating correctly. Red text means the device is unable to communicate. If the text is red, verify the installation.
