Frequently Asked Questions

What is the data reporting frequency for GM Premium and GM Premium + DriverFeedback plan? Does that affect reports on MyGeotab?

For both plans, data is reported every 30 seconds. This can affect some of the MyGeotab reports. For example:

Trips - The trip history on the map may not appear very smooth around corners and turns.
Speeding - Speeding events which occur only between the two data recording intervals (30 seconds) will not be captured.
Distance - Distance is calculated based on GPS records. So if the vehicle is following a curve, the distance calculation will be slightly lower than actual.
Seatbelt exceptions - Default mygeotab seatbelt rule will trigger an exception every time the speed crosses 10km/hr when the seatbelt was unbuckled. As the OEM device reports speed data only every 30 seconds, it may appear to cross the 10 km/hr threshold less number of times as compared to a device which has more granular reporting. Hence, the seat belt exception counts may be different.

Is the watchdog report expected to work for this solution?

Yes, the watchdog report is supported for this solution, however the reporting will be slightly different than a GO device. A heartbeat signal is sent by the device every 24 hours of vehicle inactivity. However, to preserve the vehicle’s battery power, the heartbeat signal is turned off in case a device remains inactive for a certain period of time (10 days in most cases). In these cases, the device will appear as non communicating.

How are Hard Acceleration and Harsh Braking events detected?

Forward acceleration (hard acceleration) data is available from the device when acceleration is above 0.14G. Backward acceleration (harsh braking) data is available from the device when acceleration is below -0.14G. Users can set thresholds beyond these values on MyGeotab so that an exception is generated every time the acceleration value crosses the desired threshold. Please note that exceptions will only be generated if the rule is enabled as well as depending on the threshold set in that rule.

Can I expect to see the data even before the vehicle is marked as ‘Sold’ in GM systems?

Yes, this is available on both GM plans and is possible via the ‘Pre-Delivery’ feature offered by GM. The vehicle has to be registered with Geotab using the standard steps mentioned in the partner guide and you can expect to see data for the vehicle in MyGeotab. Can I use driver feedback (In Vehicle Coaching / IVC) with GM OEM devices?

Yes, this feature is available on ‘GM Premium + DriverFeedback’ plan via the ‘In Vehicle Coaching (IVC)’ feature offered by GM. The vehicle has to be registered with Geotab using the standard steps mentioned in the partner guide and the feature needs to be enabled in MyGeotab.
