Hi all,

We are looking at ways to distinguish actual sweeping activity from normal driving time on our street sweepers.

Has anyone successfully used Geotab to monitor and report on PTO (Power Take-Off) activity, or other sweeper functions such as brush operation or vacuum operation?

We would be interested to know:

  • What vehicle/equipment type you are monitoring.
  • How the PTO or operational status is being captured.
  • Whether any additional hardware or integrations were required.
  • How the data is displayed and reported within Geotab.
  • Any lessons learned or recommendations.


We understand some local authorities may already be using PTO monitoring for sweepers, tractors, or similar specialist vehicles, and would appreciate hearing about your experience.

I have done this across multiple different applications. Plows, sweepers, public waste, really anything with a PTO. The extra equipment you're looking for is the IOX-AUXM. It's just additional hardware cost and shouldn't affect your monthly subscription assuming you're on the GO Plan. It ties into really anything you want it to. The data will come through as an AUX engine measurement in Geotab. You can use that measurement for reporting or to create custom rules.

Thank you for asking your question in our community. I know we have plenty of customer who do this regularly. I cant say for certain I know of any community users who have this set up maybe @HLui-1390 has a set up like this or @ssartor has had some experience he can share.

We will see if they or anyone else is able to share some real world information with you. If not I am happy to help give you the best answer I can get to your questions from the Geotab side of things.

I agree with @ssartor that the IOX-AUXM would be the best bet in recording if your sweeper is on and if your PTO was running. Another thing to check is if you do a full measurement check on your vehicle because some vehicles with built in PTOs actually have the PTO on or off measurement built in.
