Trailer Deprecation and TmpTrailerId

We want to update our integration to consistently identify archived trailers, and given that there can be multiple Trailers with the same name and the Trailer object doesn't include data to indicate if its archived, our plan in the interim is to look up the matching Device using the 'tmpTrailerId' and check the 'activeTo' date.

How long can we expect the 'tmpTrailerId' property to remain on Devices? Will it be there until Trailers are finally fully deprecated, or is there a possibility the property is dropped before then? I searched around for some official documentation but only found community forum posts with Geotab engineers talking about the property's intended use. I didn't see anything to indicate a timeframe for its inclusion on Devices or whether it's expected to be removed whenever Trailers are.

Hey @DarenPorter-1148,

I have an update for you!

We want to assure you that you will have plenty of notice before we remove the 'tmpTrailerId' property. Our intention is to launch the necessary alternative API (since there isn't a good option today) well in advance of deprecation. We'll announce the new API release on the Integrators Hub and via our normal channels, and then, months later and after lots of communication, we'll finally remove 'tmpTrailerId' property from the Device object for Trailers. While we're getting close to releasing the replacement API, we don't have firm dates for either step yet, but rest assured, we'll keep 'tmpTrailerId' property live for several months after the replacement launches to ensure every integrator has a chance to smoothly transition.

I hope this helps.

Sam

@ShuyMijares-2108 I think he's a master of this topic.

Hi @DarenPorter-1148

Perhaps @ShuyMijares-2108  can help us with this question

Hi @NaomiCostilla-1466  and @DarenPorter-1148 !, The Geotab SDK includes a "SerialNumber" field. This field can be empty or contain the sequence '000-000-0000'. These active entries in Geotab can represent entries that are no longer active (archived).

Hope this helps!

Hi @ShuyMijares-2108, thanks for taking the time to answer! I have a test database with some trailers that are archived and some that aren't, and for both groups (every trailer in my database), their Device entries have a blank serial number. In what situation would they be set to '000-000-0000'?

Hi @DarenPorter-1148,

That's a great question, i've reached out internally to get a definite answer on if there's any plans on making the 'tmpTrailerId' property obselete on any Device/Asset with groups: ['GroupTrailerId']. I'll reach out when I have an update.

However, I don't think there are any current plans to make it obsolete. As many integrators rely on this property I believe a public statement would be issued prior to removing it.

I hope this helps.

Sam.

It does, thank you @SamS-1511. I'll be interested in a definite answer if you're able to find one!

Thank you for confirming @SamS-1511, I greatly appreciate it! Just for a bit of clarification - when you say "alternative API", do you mean the removal/deprecation of Trailers in favor of Devices? Or something else?

Either way this gives us the confidence to continue with some integration updates, just want to make sure I'm fully on the same page. Thanks again!

My pleasure Daren, I was referring to something else which is in the works for the TrailerAttachment api.
