What is the difference between idling time (risk management) and idling time (exceptions)?

I am reviewing a unit's idling time for the same period; however, the risk management shows a longer idling time, whereas the exception report indicates a shorter duration.

Hi @****-6175 , great question thank you for asking it here in our community. I think I know what is going on here and why you see this difference.

Risk Management (Idling Violations report) captures all idling time for a vehicle. Any period where the engine is running and the vehicle is stationary for more than 200 seconds is counted. It sums up every idling period across all trips within your selected date range. This gives you the total picture of how much time the engine was running with the vehicle stopped.

Exceptions (Idling rule) works differently — it only records an event when the idling duration crosses the specific minimum threshold set in your exception rule (for example, idling for more than 5 minutes). Only those qualifying events are counted, and their individual durations are what you see in the report. Any idle periods shorter than your rule's trigger threshold are not captured at all in exceptions.

This is why Risk Management shows a higher number — it catches everything above 200 seconds, while exceptions only captures what your rule was configured to flag.
There is also a trip attribution detail worth knowing: idling that occurs before a trip begins is attributed to the previous trip in MyGeotab. Depending on your date range, this can cause small differences between reports that calculate time differently.

The exceptions directly depend on the configuration of the rules and are only considered applied events, whereas in risk management it covers all events
