MyGeotab Assets - 150 air mile rule

We have a fleet with local, regional and OTR vehicles. For the vehicles that will remain local and under the 150 air mile rule, we are setting the HOS to off. How does other fleets handle the 150 air mile rule set up? The equipment may go past that only during our peak months. Trying to cut down on the unassigned miles we have each day. Thank you

Personally, I recommend that any company with short-haul vehicles trains their drivers to use the Geotab Drive app as if they were not under the exemption.

 

The reason for this is that any time your drivers do go out of the radius, they're supposed to have all their logs for the previous days' cycle available in case of a roadside inspection, so this prevents you from having to recreate logs later and keep tabs on who's driving outside of the air-mile radius.

 

Of course, this option does end up having a lot more work involved on the front end when it comes to training your drivers and then making sure they are keeping up on managing their logs properly. However, I still recommend it because it should simplify things for you overall.

 

Some other benefits to having your drivers always managing their HOS logs include keeping them sharp on knowing how to manage their logs, and having the option of using HOS-based reports for keeping tabs on things such as how long they worked (for example, by making a report that tracks when they log into and out of the app each day).

 

If you decide you'd like to go the driver-training route, here are a couple of resources that may be useful to you:

  • Full Geotab Drive Tutorial (YouTube, free, under 10 minutes)
  • Geotab Drive Certification Course (paid; includes some extra written resources, links, and quizzes; takes ~45 minutes; complete at your own pace; comes with a serialized certificate of completion for each driver that signs up and goes through the whole course getting 100% on the quizzes--these are pretty simple and can be retaken--and playing through all of the videos)

 

Hope this helps at least give you another perspective to consider and maybe point you in a useful direction. :)

P.S. You can also monitor your drivers' locations within the air-mile radius by creating circular zones around your yard(s). Something to keep in mind about this is that 150 air miles actually translates to 172.6 road miles, so the zones you create would be bigger than just 150 air miles to be accurate. Your Geotab reseller should be able to help with this sort of thing (their info can be found in your MyGeotab database under Support > Contact Information), but if they aren't sure about this and/or you would like some additional personalized assistance, feel free to reach out to me directly to discuss.

Thank you for asking your question in our community. This one is hard to answer since anything that is said could be perceived as legal advice. In these cases most people will avoid answering things like this due to liability concerns. We do have short haul rulesets you can use. My best suggestion is to talk to your local FMCSA they may have some suggestions for you. I am sorry we could not help more. Someone may see this and comment on it but I typically see most users stay away as they dont want to tell you the wrong thing and you end you getting in trouble for it.
