Using rules to change camera settings

Using rules to change camera settings! Let's get started. MyGeotab can automatically adjust your camera settings using rule conditions. Let's see how with an example. For this example, we want to turn recording off when an asset enters a private area, then turn it back on when the asset exits. For simplicity, we've already created the Private Area zone type and zones. For more information on zones and zone types, check out our library of tutorials on Geotab Academy. Start by defining your reset rule. This rule returns the camera to the configuration established in our system settings and will be used later when you set up the configuration change rule. Select the + icon in the top right of the Rules page to create a new rule. Enter a Name that clearly identifies this rule as the reset action. Configure the rule details—color, groups, and comment—so it is easy to identify and manage later. Select the Conditions tab when ready. Add the conditions for when the camera should return to its established configuration. In this example, we want the reset to occur when the asset exits a Private Area zone type, so we'll select Zone or zone type. Select Zone Type so the rule applies to all Private Area zones. Choose Private Area from the list of Zone Types. Select Exiting for the Event so the reset rule triggers when assets leave Private Area zones. Select Add to confirm the condition is included in the reset rule. Save the reset rule when finished adding conditions. You can review the reset rule in the Advanced section of the rules page. Select the + in the top right to create the rule to change the camera settings. Enter a Name that clearly identifies the camera configuration change action. Configure the rule details—color, groups, and comment—so it is easy to identify and manage later. Select the Conditions tab when ready. Add the conditions for when the camera settings should change. In this example, we want the settings to change when the asset enters a Private Area zone type. Use the opposite, complementary action from the reset rule. In this example, the rule applies when entering a Private Area zone type, which pairs with our reset rule of exiting a Private Area zone type. Select Add to confirm the condition is included in the configuration change rule. Select the Notifications tab when finished adding conditions. Select the More dropdown to find the camera settings option. Select Apply camera settings from the list. Select the camera setting that should change. Select Add setting to add each additional camera setting change required for your use case. Link this rule to the Reset rule so the camera returns to its established configuration at the appropriate time. Add the camera settings action to the rule. Save the configuration change rule to activate the automation. Review both rules in the Advanced section of the Rules page. For our example, the cameras now turn off when assets enter Private Area zones and turn back on when they exit.
