Warnings and considerations

WARNING! Use Geotab telematics devices only with Geotab-approved harnesses acquired from Geotab-authorized channels. Use of non-Geotab harnesses from unauthorized channels can cause serious safety risks, including fire, and can lead to serious personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle.

! IMPORTANT (USA only): Place the enclosed CARB Executive Order (EO) identification label sticker in the vehicle’s engine compartment, somewhere near the Vehicle Emission Control Information label on a smooth and clean surface. The EO identification label is required to aid inspection of the vehicle under the California Smog Check program and other applicable smog test programs. See here for more info

! IMPORTANT: Customers with 12V/24V vehicles who are planning to upgrade their device from GO8 or older models to GO9 or newer models are strongly recommended to replace the associated cable harness with an approved version. For a list of impacted harnesses and their approved versions, refer to the following document for more information.

! IMPORTANT: Due to a known interoperability issue, customers with 24V vehicles and 12V Volvo/Mack Engine vehicles are advised to use HRN-CG13S1-A, a heavy duty adapter, when using the 16-pin universal harness HRN-GS16K22-A. For more information, refer to the Product Advisory.

Introduction

For many vehicles, the installation of a GO device requires an intermediary harness cable. The purpose of this document is to help you identify which harness cables are required for installation based on vehicle make, model, and year, as described in the Compatibility Tables.

Once you know which harnesses are required for your customer’s installation needs, the harnesses can be ordered in MyAdmin, and you can refer to the related Harness Identification and Application document for more detailed information about each harness.

Vehicle assessment instructions

To complete a vehicle assessment, do the following:

  1. Request a complete vehicle list from the customer, which includes:
    1. VIN
    2. Manufacturer
    3. Model
    4. Year
  2. Prepare a list of vehicles for harness assessment:
    1. Ensure that there is no missing information or incomplete entries.
    2. Normalize the manufacturer and model names (for example, ensure all variations of model names, such as F-150 and F150, are entered in the same way).
    3. Use the Summary tab to get counts of each vehicle type.
  3. Use the Compatibility Tables to determine which harnesses are required for each vehicle.

Vehicle type overview

Light-duty vs. heavy-duty

An important distinction between light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles: light-duty vehicles have a 12V electrical system, and heavy-duty vehicles (commercial semi-trucks, industrial machinery, etc.) have a 24V electrical system.

Harness HRN-GS16K2, which is used in many installation scenarios, has two versions:

  1. HRN-GS16K2-LD for light-duty (12V) vehicles
  2. HRN-GS16K2-HD for heavy-duty (24V) vehicles

Light-duty vehicles

The vast majority of light-duty vehicles made since 1997 have a 16-pin OBDII port and a 12 V electrical system. They are able to use the standard HRN-BS16S4 harness, the HRN-BS16S4F harness, or the HRN-GS16K2-LD (LD = light-duty) universal T-Harness. Review the Compatibility Tables for any events.

Comparison of different OBD ports in light-duty vehicles.

✱ NOTE: A standard GO9 device is also a 16-pin port, so a harness may not be required.

Heavy-duty trucks

Listed below are a number of common heavy-duty truck manufacturers:

  1. Autocar
  2. Freightliner
  3. International
  4. Isuzu
  5. Kenworth
  6. Mack
  7. Peterbilt
  8. Sterling
  9. Volkswagen
  10. Volvo
  11. Western Star

GO RUGGED

GO RUGGED requires specific harnesses for installation. For more detailed information about installation and harness types, please see the Vehicle Specific Installation Notes and the Harness Identification and Application document.

Diagnostic ports

OBDII and RP1226 diagnostic ports are supported.

The websites below can assist in finding the diagnostic port in your vehicle.

  1. Innova DLC — North America only
  2. CarMD — North America only
  3. The Diagnostic Box — North America & Europe
  4. Outils OBD Facile — North America & Europe

California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulation

! IMPORTANT: For compliance, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Inspection & Maintenance regulation requires access to data that currently is not provided by any OEM via the RP1226 connector. To meet this regulation as it is currently written, vehicles operating in California cannot use the RP1226 connector for the CARB Clean Truck Check (CTC) program, however, the RP1226 connector can be used in California outside of the CTC program.

VIN decoding

If you only have access to a VIN, there are various online decoding sites that can retrieve the Make, Model and Year of a vehicle based on its VIN.

Harness estimates

! IMPORTANT: Geotab cannot guarantee harness compatibility due to limited information about specific vehicle configurations, and potential third-party modifications or add-ons. While Geotab has made efforts to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the provided information, Geotab cannot guarantee that the information is free from errors or omissions or fits your particular needs.

Professional installation from an Authorized Installer is always encouraged. If you need assistance in determining the correct harness for your specific vehicle, please contact your Authorized Installer.

If you have any questions or feedback, contact Geotab Support for further assistance.

Equipment & off-road assets

✱ NOTE: The GO RUGGED is mandatory for these vehicles.

The following tables provide information regarding Equipment and Off-Road Assets. Generally speaking, assets in this table fall into one of the following categories:

  1. Equipment with engines that produce less than 25 hp, or equipment without a diagnostics port (meaning they likely do not have ECM capabilities). Such equipment requires a non-ECM type harness (HRN-RW03K4, HRN-RW04K4, HRN-RW03K5).
  2. Assets that are NOT considered on-highway vehicles, which includes a broad range of applications (agricultural, construction, oil & gas, recreational, etc.).
    1. You can verify whether an asset is considered on-highway or not by entering its VIN into the following NHTSA VIN decoder: https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder/
    2. If the asset has a valid 17-character VIN, then it is considered on-highway and the below table does not apply. Otherwise, it is considered off-road, in which case you may refer to the below table to determine which harnesses are required.
