Assets > Device Offline - Timeframe in MyGeotab

On the Assets page how is the Device Offline tab being calculated? I've seen the device offline for hours and for a day+. Is there a fault code associated with being offline or is it movement based? Customers are getting concerned that a lot of their devices are showing as offline when they just didn't move for a day.

Hi @User-10763 , great question! Thank you for asking it here in our community.

The Device Offline status is based on communication with the MyGeotab server, not simply on whether the vehicle has moved.

In practical terms, MyGeotab looks at the time since the device last uploaded data. For example, Offline 1d+ means that more than one day has passed since the last upload.

This status is not associated with a specific vehicle fault code or DTC. It is a connectivity/data-upload indicator. A vehicle can be parked for a day and still not appear offline if the device continues to communicate periodically. Conversely, a device may appear offline if it has lost power, lost cellular connectivity, been unplugged, or otherwise stopped uploading data, even if the vehicle has not moved.

I would treat the status as an indication that there has been a communication gap, rather than proof that the device has failed. To investigate an individual asset, I would compare:

- The last communication or upload time
- The device's power and connection status
- Any recent trips or diagnostic data
- Whether the device is in a low-power or battery-saving mode

So, in short: offline is communication-based, not movement-based, and it does not create a specific fault code by itself.

Hope that helps clarify what customers are seeing!

If I recall correctly, if the GO unit has the ignition on, it takes about 10 minutes of no comms for it to show offline. If the ignition is off, then it takes over 24 hours to show offline.

The status of devices in MyGeotab reports is mainly calculated based on the Last Communication Date. Here are the key details about how it works:
•
Status calculation: A device shows as "OK" if it has communicated within the last 24 hours. If it hasn't communicated for a full day, the system marks it as disconnected.
•
Failure codes: There is a specific failure called "Telematics device failure: the telematics device has disconnected," which records the exact timestamp of the disconnection. You can see it under Maintenance > Diagnostics > Failures.
•
Relation to movement: The device usually communicates when it detects ignition or movement. If the vehicle hasn't moved in over 24 hours and there are no heartbeat events, it will appear as disconnected, even if there is no technical problem.
•
Visual indicators: In the Watchdog report, devices are highlighted in orange after 3-21 days without connection and in red.
